The Salt Lake Tribune OBITUARIES Wednesday, February 2, 2000 A7 OBITUARIES Dr. E. Ray Birdsall Dr. E. Ray Birdsall, age 87, of Orem, Utah, died Monday, January 31, 2000 at home of causes incident lo old ape.

Dr. Ray was born in Monroe, Utah on March 9, 1912 to Leo Ray Birdsal and Johannah Lambertsen Birdsall. Because his Mother died when Ray six years old, he was reared by his Aunt Elsie Taylor in Marysville, Utah. He married Edith Wilkinson June 14, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. She died in January of 1977.

They are survived by their eight children: Kathleen Conover (Paul) Ferron, UT; Delwyn Birdsall (Karen) Layton, UT; Elizabeth Hill (Chris) Clearfield, UT; Kendall Birdsall (Nancy), Sacramento, CA; Juanita Van Keulen (Doug), Layton, Sylvan Birdsall (Sharon) Simi Valley, Linnette Ross (Robert) Bakersfield, Alan Birdsall (Sherrie) Layton, 41 grandchildren and 63 greatgrandchildren. Dr. Ray became a chiropractor in 1938 after graduating from LACC. He has since offered 51 years of loving, dedicated service to healing others. in 1979 Ray married LaVonne (Lonni) Bly who survives him along with seven stepchildren; Saundra Rowzee, Pahrump, NV: Steven (Jan), Page, Michael Rowzee (Lorraine), West Jordan, Debra Good, San Diego, Patrick Ryan (Sandra), OK; Scott Ryan (Angela), Taylorsville, Patti Gillespie (David), Sandy, 26 step-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.

Ray was proud of his large family who love him dearly. His other interests included Gospel study, genealogy, herbology, natural healing, fishing and reading. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 at Hillcrest 4th Ward Chapel, 800 South and 400 East in Orem, UT. with a 9:45 a.m.

31, 2000 He was born Oct. 16, 1925 in Denver, Colorado to Sidney Stuart and Bertha Mae Houser Brown. He graduated from West High School. Served in the US Navy Seabees 87th Construction Battalion. He married Evelyn Hartshorn December 22, 1945 in Lehi, Utah.

Later solemnized in the in the LDS Temple. A convert, Dick served as High Priest Group leader, at the time of his death, in the Cannon 8th Ward, and in several other positions. He worked as a supervisor at Univac for several years, then as a line driver for Browning Freight and he retired from Milne Freight. Survived by his wife, Evelyn H. Brown; children, Mary Lynn May, Sandy; Beverlee Brown, Kilgore, Larraine (Glen) Kittle, and Marlene Friedland, Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren, David Anderson, Kelly Ivie, Lynsie May, Jennie Cohagen, Richard and Dawn Ann Klingensmith; Riquel Gerber, Robert Lee Joffs II, who was like a son living with them for several years and five and a half, great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his sister, Mary Louise Moriarty. Special thanks to Dr. Abraham and all of the doctors and nurses at the Veterans Hospital who helped him. Tony Butkovich Anton John Butkovich, 79, died January 31, 2000 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born March 25, 1920 in Bjelai, Yugoslovia (Croatia) to Joseph Peter Butkovich and Matilda Krumpitic. He was an All-State football player at Jordan High School.

He worked at Kennecott Copper and then served in the U.S. Army during World War Il for over five years. He believed in God, Catholicism, and honesty, and was a loving and caring man. Survived by brother, Michael (Xene) Butkovich, Sandy; sister, Dorothy (Kent) Hansen, Draper; four nieces and three nephews. Preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral Mass will be Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 9757 South 1700 East, where friends may call one hour prior to services. son of Henery Willam and Elizabeth Edgren Aulimon. Married Grace Peggy Carrillo Aullman Oct. 2. 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah; later divorced. Rex served in the U.S.

Army during World War I and fought to berate Europe. He WOS on Infantry sergeant who particpaled in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Forty-four years later he was awarded the Bronze Star medal by Governor Norm Bangerter in Salt Lake City. Survived by children, Ted Chris Aullman, Kenney Junior Aulimon, Larry Rex Auliman and Linda Aullman fiero, all of Salt Lake City. 11 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren.

Helen Carlson Helen Carlson, age 93, died Monday, January 31, 2000 in Bountiful, Utah. She was born June 21, 1906 in Salt Lake City to William Gustav and Bertha Thorup Lindstrom. She married Alvin J.

Carlson on September 16, 1925 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died in 1971. She resided in the Highland Park area (Sugar Hhouse) most of her life. She was a member of the Garden Heights North Ward. Helen had a good life and a good sense of humor, She was unique, independent and spunky.

She was a hard worker. She worked 32 years at the Belvedere Hotel as office manager and bookkeeper and worked at the State Fair in the Arts building. Her artistic talent produced many beautiful oil paintings. She enjoyed gardening, golf, bowling, knitting, crocheting, candy making and dipping and playing bridge with her dear friends. She enjoyed playing Scrabble and did her puzzles in the paper every day until three weeks before her death.

She loved her family. Her three children and 13 grandchildren are: Ronald Carlson, (deceased); (Lorraine), Chris, Brett, Colleen, Karen and David; Dene Glissmeyer (deceased) (Richard) Stephanie, Stacy, Tammy and Brian; Judy Mansell (Larry), Doug, Lane, Loren, and Maralee, and almost 28 greatgrandchildren. Two sisters recently preceded her in death, Lucille Rossiter and Dorothy Holmgren. Her brother Gaell Lindstrom (Marilyn), Hurricane, Utah, survives her. Our beloved husband, daddy, and grampy, Wesley Theodore Church Sr. passed into the loving arms of God on January 28, 2000, after a courageous battle with pulmonary disease. During his battle over the last year with throat cancer and pulmonary disease he showed all those who came to know and love him what courage, strength and humor he had as he faced his illness with dignity. Wes was born on April 10, 1944 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Clarence L. and Eunice Darnell Church.

He served in the United State Coast Guard, in North Carolina and Hawaii. Married Pauline Savage au, later divorced. Married Joanne Bird on April 28, 1979. He is survived by his wife and love, Joanne (South Jordan); son, Wesley T. Church Jr.

(Salt Lake City); daughters, Doreen Earle (Albion, Maine), and Chelsea Church (South Jordan); five grandchildren, Courtney, Camille, Kimberly, Desmond, and Ashley; brother, Clarence Church' (Greensboro, North Carolina) and many family and friends that he cared for and loved. Born May 25, 1925 in San Francisco, the daughter of Orlando I and Edith C. Morley. Survived by her husband Theral R. Nielsen; son, Kirk M. (Janice) of Brasilia, Brazil; daughters, Andrea N.

(Randall) Edwards of Bountiful: Rebecca N. (David) Heylen Folsom, CA; Kirsten N. (David) Eads of Ellicott City, MD; sister, Ruth M. Thomson of Orem; 16 grandchildren. Lovey graduated with honors from Eureka High School, Eureka, CA.

where she excelled in music, sports, and student government. Al this time she also began her career in journalism and media by working for the Humboidt Times. She attended Humboldt State where she was editor of the newspaper, Vice President of the Associated Women Students, and A Cappella Choir member. Upon graduation she became a radio personality at KIEM, "the voice of the She also taught piano for over 30 years. LaVerle was a faithful member of the LDS Church.

In 1949 she was called to the Danish Mission. In 1952, she married Theral in the Salt Lake Temple. In 1992 she and Theral served a mission in the Family History Library In Salt Lake City. She was an avid family historian and genealogist. She served in various positions such as organist, choir director and Society president.

Community, service Included establishing an interfaith Christmas concert in Martinez, tutoring reading in Bountiful and hosting foreign visitors for the International House hospitality program of Washington, D.C. Those who came as strangers always left as Lovey's friends, Lovey's greatest joy and accomplishment was her family. She was a wonderful, creative, talented, fun loving wife and mother who dedicated all her energies to making home a great place to be. She had a great sense of humor and leaves a legacy of love, laughter and acceptance to all her family and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 5, 2000 of 11 a.m, at the Bountiful 43rd Ward Chapel, 990 North Chapel Drive.

Interment, Bountiful City Cemetery, Grete Wang Gurholt Grete Wang Gurholl, 77, of Finn's Restaurant, died peacefully In her sleep January 29, 2000, at her home in Salt Lake City. Grete was born in Oslo, Norway, May 12, 1922, to Nelly Roed and Asbjorn Wang.

She WaS raised by her mother and stepfather, Jeremias Roed, and educated in Oslo at the Academy of Beauty and Den Franske Skole. Grete came to Salt Lake City from Norway In 1951 to join her longtime sweetheart, Finn Zakeus Gurholt. She married him at Alta's Peruvian Lodge on March 27, 1951. They opened Finn's Restaurant on Parley's Way in 1952. it was an immediate success, becoming one of Salt Lake's finest.

Grete had a gift for making people feel welcome, and was a wonderful hostess both in her home and at the restaurant. Finn died in 1991. Grete kept the restaurant open until 1997. Grete is survived by her brother, Bjorn Wang, Norway; her children, Nelly Kilgore, Salt Lake City; Gurl Stevenson, Olympia, Washington; Finniandia McGowan, San Rafael, California; and Finn Zakeus Gurholt, Salt Lake City. Her grandchildren are Heidi, Christian, Anya, Patrick, Laura, Amanda, Audrey, and Katharine.

At the time of her death, Grete's loyal canine companion, Charm, was lying by her side as was his custom for 10 years. Funeral services will be Wednesday Feb. 2nd, 1 p.m. at Nell O'Donnell Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Salt Lake Humane Society.

Elizabeth Lou Hall Elizabeth Lou Hall, age 77, died January 31, 2000, in Bountiful, Utah. Born July 31, 1922, In Crawfordsville, Indiana to William and Oza Kingery. Married James Robert Hall December 22, 1945 in Lafayette, Indiana. She was always willing to give service to others. Her life centered around her family.

Gave every endeavor her best effort. Fought the good fight with a lot of love and a big heart until the end. She will be missed dearly but will remain part of everyone she touched. She is survived by brothers, George Kingery (Nel) of Clarskshill, Indiana; and Kenneth Kingery of Lafayette, Indiana; sister, Eva Shumate (Clay) of Lafayette, Indiana; sons, John Hall (Rebecca) of Trabuco Canyon, California; and Michael Hall (Mary) of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter, Sherry Robinson of Bountiful, Utah; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Preceded in death by mother; father; sisters, Willadean Kingery, May Deeming, Ivanelle Moore; and husband, James Robert Hall.

Funeral directors, Evans Early Mortuary. Mary Jane Hall Mary Jane Hughes Hall passed on peacefully on January 30, 2000 at her daughter's home on Whidbey Island in the state of Washington. She was born on March 1, 1924 in Charleston, West Virginia to Frank Wardell and Constance Fox Hughes. She attended school in Charleston and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. While working In Newport News, Virginia she met Thomas M.

Hall. They were married in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 24, 1944. They began married life in El Paso, Texas, later moving to Charleston, West Virginia; Nashville, Tennessee; San Francisco, California; and finally Payson, Utah, where Tom began his medical practice with help and support from Jane. Jane was a beautiful lady Inside and out. She loved to laugh and have fun and to try new things.

She enjoyed golf, bridge, traveling, reading, and especially music. Her passion for music started early with voice lessons from a dear family friend, Carrie Minotti. She had a beautiful singing voice. She was a strong supporter of the Utah Valley Symphony and served as Symphony Guild president In 1964. She was involved in many charitable causes through the years.

Jane had one sister Kathryn (Katzy) Hughes Dayfield. After Katzy's retirement she moved to Payson from Florida, Jane and Katzy were not only sisters but best friends. They made up for lost time traveling and enjoying time together. Sadly, Kathryn died in 1990. Jane lived a blessed life prior to developing dementia in late 1990.

With the help of her husband, Tom, she struggled to cope with the changes that overcame her. After Tom's untimely death In 1994. Jane moved to Washington to the home of her daughter, Julle. Her Illness could not destroy her spirit or sense of humor. Her smile and occasional humorous remarks remained precious reminders of the person she was.

Through it all and to the end she forgot no one, friend or family member. Jane will be missed by her four children; Connie (Dennis) Strong, Bountiful; Charles Bruce, Nephi; Chris, Lake Forrest Park, WA; Julle (Ricardo), Whidbey Island, WA. Survivors Include 11 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2000 at Walker Mortuary, 587 South 100 West, Payson.

Jorgensen, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Sunshine Terrace from complicalions related to strokes. He was born In Pleasant Grove, Utah, on Sept. 28, 1912, the first child of Samuel Ovid and Mary Ellen Bullock Jorgensen Samuel is survived by his wife, Christine: three brothers, Max (Maurine) Jorgensen and Glen (Lois) Jorgensen of Pleasant Grove: Gerald (Faye) Jorgensen of Lehi: one sister, Arlene Jorgensen of Chino Valley, Arizona; one sister-in-law, Claudia Jorgensen of St. George; one brother-in-law.

Harold Degelbeck of American Fork; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: two brothers, George Emerson Jorgensen and William Mark Jorgensen and wife, Gale; two sisters, Helen Jorgensen Degelbeck and husband Ed, and Marie Jorgensen Degelbeck, Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Feb. 3, al the River Heights 3rd Ward Chapel, 600 East 800 South. Alice Elinor Jones Evanston, WY- Alice Elinor Jones, passed away in Evanston on January 38: 2000. Alice was born in Evanston, WY, on Sept. 4, 1903, the daughter of John Richard and Jane Simpson Jones.

Alice was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Alice worked as a telephone operator for 41 years. She was involved with several clubs including: Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Comp Frontier index, and Telephone Pioneers. Alice helped raise a niece, Althea G. Elis and is survived by several nieces, nephews, and many great and great great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by three sisters, Althea Johnston, Annie Hopkins and Lena Jones; Ihree brothers, Harold, John and Milton Jones: and also two infant brothers, Ellsworth and Melvin. Funeral services will be held in the Crandall Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000 at 12 noon. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday from a.m.

Interment will be in the Evanston Cemetery. in leu of flowers, donations may be made to the Unita County Senior Citizens Center, Evanston, WY. Mary McCollum Lehl-Mary Alice Yocum McCollum, age 82, formerly of Lehi, Utah, passed away January 28, 2000, in Aurora, Colorado. She WaS born January 29, 1917, in Millbrook, Ohio, to tra Dalley and Mabel Marie Kister Yocum. She was a registered nurse and an active member of the LDS Church.

She served two missions, one to Gallup, New Mexico, serving among the Navajo Indians; and the second in Denver, among the Hmong speaking people. She was also active in and enjoyed doing name extractions in genealogy work. She loved sewing, canning, gardening and planting trees, baking bread, and loved serving people. She Is survived by five sons and two daughters, David (Betty) McCollum, Petersburg, Marilyn (Walter) Pate, Byers, Larry (Mercedes) McCollum, Lehi; John (Lecia) McCollum, Tooele; Judy (Leonard) Brown, Lehi; Randy (Beverly) Hoaglund, Pocatello, Gary Hoaglund, Tampa, 23 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister-inlaw, Delores Yocum, West Plains, MO. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Howard Yocum.

Main, Lehi, and Friday at the church one hour prior to services. Interment, Lehi City Cemtery. Roy E. McDonald, MD Father, friend and mentor, died in the presence of his family on January 30, 2000. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania on Feb.

22. 1921, he showed signs of scholarship from his earliest years. Educated at Pennsylvania State University, he then graduated from Temple Medical 1945. After serving as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps, he settled in Salt Lake City, where he was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah College of Medicine. His interests varied widely from research in drug evaluation in Schizophrenic patients to mineral metabolism.

He became one of Salt Lake City's preeminent physicians, where he practiced from 1953 to 1988. His lifelong dedication to health care and education led him to serve as President and Chief of Staff and Medical Education Coordinator at St. Marks Hospital. His spirit remains with those who shared his humor and companionship through the many years of tennis, fishing, literature, historical study, critical thinking and music. His wife, Martha; children, Amy and Osman Sanyer; Tracy McDonald; Dusty and Oscar Acevedo; Leslie and Andy White; and Charles and Kellee McDonald; and his grand children, Elena, Joey, David and Michael Mathias, Cari, Baily and Chase are honored by his memory and spirit.

B.G. Niedfeldt B.G. Niedfeldt, born January 5, 1934 to Louis and Meta Wege Niedfeldt in Bangor, Wisconsin, died at 2 p.m.

on Monday, January 31, 2000 of liver cancer. His wife, Deloris, and his progeny, Deborah and Jonathan, survive him. Deborah's children: Yavanna, Derrick, and Emily; Jonathan's (Melanie) children: Jennifer, Laura, Rachel, Donald, and Cameron; and his sister, Doris Niedfeldt Peterson of Wilson, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1959 and received his Masters from NYU in 1962. B.G.'s career began with Bell Laboratory in 1959; then he had the joy of being sent to Washington, D.C., when Bellcomm was created.

Bellcomm was an advisory board for the project Apollo missions. He returned to Bell Laboratories in 1971. B.G. finished his career with Lucent Technologies in Lisle, Illinois, retiring in 1999. He was a long time resident of Wheaton, I- linois.

He was an avid tournament bridge player and loved to sing in choruses. He sang for many years with the Berkshire Chorus in Massachusetts, also with the Wheaton College Community Chorus. Funeral Services were held at Anderson Sons Mortuary in American Fork, Utah on February 1, 2000. Maurice "Maurie" A. Gilbert CENTERVILLE--Jan.

29, 2000, our husband, father and grandfather, Maurie Gilbert, died after suffering a long and uncomplaining battle with a malignant brain tumor. Maurie was born Oct. 8, 1931 In Bryan, Ohio to John Gilbert, Sr. and Edith Calvin Gilbert. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.

He married the love of his Dixie Grow May 7, 1956. He was a member of the Bountiful Elks Lodge for 25 years, and was honored as "Elk of the Year 1991- He was a member of the Ogden Eagles for 35 years. Howard was an Eagle Scout and he was a World War I Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific as a Pharmacist's Mate, He graduated from the University of Utah with a Chemical Engineer's degree. Howard was the Resident Manager at the St. Regis Paper Company for 23 years.

Her many, friendships were cultivated in Jackson, MO; Honolulu, HI and most recently in the University neighborhood. Daniel was born June 2, 1980, in Ogden, Utah, to Steven Hale and Neka Fernelius Roundy.

Daniel was an Eagle Scout and worked as a counselor at Camps Kiesel and Loll. He graduated in 1998 from Davis High School. He loved sports, especially basketball, SOCe cer, and snowboarding. Daniel attended Charles Harold "Heb" Simpson HOOPER--Charles Harold Simpson, 90, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2000 at Manor Care Center in South Ogden. He was born May 2, 1909 In Hooper, Utah, the son of Valentine George and Lucy Elizabeth Miles Simpson.

He married Kathryn Child on March 13, 1937 in Logan, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 30, 1938. Kathryn passed away on April 9, 1995. He served as a high priest and was a member of the Hooper 5th Ward. He was an executive secretary in the bishopric and was on the building committee.

He also served as secretary of the Seventies Quorum and Elders secretary. He enjoyed temple work and did two sessions almost daily. Heb had been an aircraft mechanic at HIll Air Force Base, refiring in 1973 after 23 years of service and was a farmer for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, boating and camping. He is survived by one son, Ronald C.
