Victoria Quintero, 51

PERRIS —— Victoria Alvarez Quintero, 51, died Thursday, March17, 2005.

She was born Dec. 23, 1953, in Mexico City. She was ahomemaker.

Mrs. Quintero is survived by her husband, Evaristo Q. Garcia ofPerris; daughters Julie Carpil of Perris and Adriana Bowman of SunCity; son, Antonio Garcia of Perris; and five grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 21, atMiller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. A Mass will becelebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, at St. James CatholicChurch with Monsignor Edward Nunez officiating. Interment atMenifee Valley Memorial Park in Sun City is planned.

Natlie Ljung, infant

WINCHESTER —— Natlie Ljung, an infant was born and diedThursday, March 17, 2005, at Kaiser-Permanente in Riverside.

Natlie is survived by her parents, Star and Martin Ljung ofWinchester; grandparents Patricia and Richard Green of Winchester,Thomas J. Cooper of Ramona and Frank and Lis Ljung of Corona;great-grandparents William and Tina Arsaga, Bob and Lou Cooper,Grete and Henry Haupt and Viggo and Ruth Nielsen; and numerousaunts and uncles.

A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 22,at Temecula Public Cemetery.

William Wieland, 75

VISTA – William E. Wieland, 75, died Thursday, March 10, 2005,at his home of esophageal cancer.

Born Dec. 11, 1929, in Washington, D.C., he lived in San DiegoCounty for 15 years. He was a commercial airline pilot for UnitedAirlines, retiring in 1990 as a captain after 35 years. He was acarrier based fighter pilot during the Korean War. He was a memberof St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Mr. Wieland was preceded in death by his parents, Herman andGertrude Wieland.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Beth Wieland of Vista;sons Paul Wieland of Pennsylvania, and John Wieland of LagunaHills; daughter Lynn Gowdy of Sacramento; stepdaughters ConnieMiller of Camarillo and Sandy Lepire of Vista; stepson Dan Barrettof N. Ogden, Utah; sister Mary Margaret Blanchard of Cucamonga; and11 grandchildren.

Rosary will be recited Tuesday, March 22, at St. Thomas MoreCatholic Church with Sister Maureen Brown officiating.

A Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 23, at St. ThomasMore Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Ratajczakofficiating.

Interment will be Thursday, March 24, at Fort Rosecrans NationalCemetery in Point Loma with Paul Wieland officiating.

Michelle Owens, 49

VISTA – Michelle D. Owens, 49, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, ofcancer.

She was born Aug. 7, 1955, in Detroit. She retired in October2004, as an in-home caregiver.

Ms. Owens is survived by her sons, Anthony Miller, KearstonOwens and Ian Farmer, all of San Diego, and Robert Moore andMichael Owens, both of Long Beach; daughters Tinshia Owens ofVista, Shenae Davis of San Diego and Karie Owens of Mira Mesa;brothers Charles Kyle of San Diego and Van White of Los Angeles;sisters Lynette Pearson of Mira Mesa and Yvonne Gatling of LongBeach; and grandchildren Krishawn, Calvin and Niani.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2,at Mariposa apartments in Vista.

A private cremation is planned.

George Lasiewicz, infant

RANCHO BERNARDO – George William Lasiewicz, an infant, diedFriday, March 11, 2005.

He was born Thursday, March 10, 2005, in San Diego.

George is survived by his parents, Cheryl and Bill Lasiewicz ofRancho Bernardo; brother Benjamin William Lasiewicz of RanchoBernardo; and grandparents Laurel Wik of Portland, Ore., BoleslausBenjamin Lasiewicz of Stone Lake, Wis., and James Weaver of Nelson,Wis.

A private service and cremation will be held.

Carol Krein, 58

ESCONDIDO – Carol J. Krein, 58, died Thursday, March 17,2005.

Born Oct. 13, 1946, in Evansville, Ind., she lived in Escondidofor 29 years. She was a member of the Lutheran Women’s MissionaryLeague, and the Red Hat Society. She attended Community LutheranChurch in Escondido. She attended Bosse High School inEvansville.

Mrs. Krein is survived by her husband of 29 years, Arthur J.Krein of Escondido; daughters and son-in-law Amy Dawn and TerrySchulz of Lake Forrest, Holly Diane Stone of Snoqualmie, Wash., andCarey Delane Krein of Escondido; mother Billie Fortner ofEvansville, Ind.; brother and sister-in-law Mac and Cindy Fortnerof Evansville; and grandchildren Corey, Rebecca, Brooklyn, J.J.,Bailey, Jacob and Bishop.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23,at Community Lutheran Church, 3575 E. Valley Parkway inEscondido.

Sheila Stubblefield, 56

FALLBROOK – Sheila Stubblefield, 56, died Sunday, March 13,2005, in Encinitas of natural causes.

Born May 4, 1948, in San Bernardino, she lived in Fallbrook for19 years. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist inEscondido, where she served as church clerk for more than 10 yearsand on many committees.

She was a member of the Rainbow Community as the

4-H leader for seven years. She enjoyed collecting children’spop-up books, doll houses and toy hedgehogs.

Mrs. Stubblefield was preceded in death by her parents, ThomasKenneth and Lila Ward Sickels Powell.

She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Bill Stubblefield ofFallbrook; son and daughter-in-law Colby and Michele Montgomery ofFairfax, Va.; and daughter Megan Montgomery of Olympia, Wash.

Private services are planned.

The family suggests donations to the Nurse’s Fund, 691 SpartaDrive, Encinitas, CA 92024.

Lucile Lynch, 88

ESCONDIDO — Lucile B. Lynch, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2005,at Palomar Medical Center.

Born June 11, 1916, in Banning, she lived in Escondido for 53years.

Mrs. Lynch was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lynch, in1982.

She is survived by her son, Philip Lynch of Escondido; andbrother Glen Buckmaster of Grants Pass, Ore.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March31, at the Palomar Heights Care Center, 1260 E. Ohio Ave. inEscondido.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to ElizabethHospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Matthew B. White, Ph.D.

1934 — 2004

Matthew B. White died suddenly at his home in Cohasset, Mass.,on Dec. 22, 2004.

His parents were Calvin and Maud White. The youngest of sixchildren, he was born in San Diego and raised in Escondido.

Matt was the first of his family to pursue higher education. Heworked part-time during high school and put himself through collegeand graduate school. He attended San Diego State for two years andthen received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physicsfrom UC Berkeley. He was a member of the Phi Beta KappaSociety.

Matt was a pioneer in the field of lasers and electro-optics. Hewas awarded 16 basic patents and was the author of 18 publishedarticles.

From 1972 to 1993, Matt was employed as a physicist at theOffice of Navel Research in Boston. One of his many areas ofexpertise was underwater lasers. As part of his duties he was ascience advisor to NATO for four years and attended NATO meetingsin France, Spain and Turkey.

In 1984, he was assigned (part-time) to the Strategic DefenseInitiative (“Star Wars”) to develop advanced imaging technologiesfor ICBM detection and object identification.

In 1988, he became a member of the U.S. government’s SeniorExecutive Service and was promoted to the position of director.Surveillance and Communications Division, Office of NavelResearch.

Retiring from government service in 1993, he joined the PolaroidCorporation to serve as Assistant Director of Research for SpecialProjects.

In 1999, Matt formed his own company, MicroContinuum Inc. inCambridge.

As a hobby, Matt enjoyed singing and playing the acustic gituarand trumpet and would often entertain at retirement homes in theCohasset area.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marianne; their threesons, Matthew W. of West Milford, N.J., Michael A. of Arlington,Mass., and Leonard A. of Culver City, Calif.; his sister, Betty LouLloyd of El Sobrante, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

He was a humble, good-humored, yet remarkable man and will bedeeply missed.

A memorial service for Dr. White will be held on March 26, atthe First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church on CohassetCommon.

Betty Sherwood Kinney

Betty Sherwood Kinney passed away peacefully on March 15, 2005,with loving family at her side. Her grand-nephew, Keith Sherwood,stepdaughter Susan Middleton and step-granddaughter AmberleyMiddleton were with her in her final hours. She is missed by familyacross the nation, friends, neighbors and parishioners of St.Michael’s-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Carlsbad, California.

Betty was born in Columbus, Ohio, on July 25, 1916, and spenther youth in London and Springfield, Ohio. She studied nursing atOhio State University and shared with her Aunt Stella Milburn alifelong enthusiasm for the Buckeyes and affiliation with the ChiOmega sorority. After college graduation, Betty enlisted in theU.S. Army and served as a nurse on board a World War II hospitalship.

Betty was a devoted caretaker of her mother, Carrie Mae Fisher.In the late 1940s they moved from Ohio to San Diego to be near herbrother, Robert Milburn Sherwood, his wife, Ellen, and theirchildren, Art, Judy and Charles. Living in Ocean Beach, BettySherwood was director of the Visiting Nurses Association of SanDiego, and developed strong and effective Visiting Nurse programsin San Diego throughout the 1950s and 1960s. It was through theVisiting Nurses that she met Lola LaFay, a subsequent companion of30 years. In the mid 1970s, Betty relocated from Ocean Beach toCarlsbad.

Betty was first a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in SanDiego, and later St. Michael’s-by-the-Sea in Carlsbad. Her devotionto the church community, service on the Altar Guild and deepdedication to the church were defining aspects of her life. Late inher life, through her beloved St. Michael’s she met George EdwardKinney Jr. They were married on January 7, 1994, and spent eightwonderful, loving years together until George’s death.

Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Bob (1993) andhusband George (2002) and survived by nephews Art, Charlie andniece Judy and their families. She is also survived by San Diegoresidents, Keith and Kristi Sherwood; and great-nephews, Brad andDoug; as well as Susan and Amberley; and step-grandson, SeanMiddleton.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael’s-by-the-Sea inCarlsbad at 10 a.m. Monday, March 21. Interment at All SaintsCemetery in Oceanside will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of theNorth Coast.

Robert Andersen

Business executive and Who’s Who In America

Robert Anderson, age 67, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at hishome of cancer. Born Oct. 9, 1937, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to IngolfBertle Andersen and Helen Akin McDowell Andersen.

Robert Andersen graduated from Grossmont High School in 1956;two years later in 1958 he married Elaine Marie Wood in El Cajon,Calif. In 1959 he became the supervisor at Golden Arrow Diary inSan Diego, later he moved to Hollandia Dairy in San Marcos, wherehe worked as the retail sales manager. In 1969 he founded HealthBest Inc. with partner Chuck Darland, which they ran together for29 years until it was sold in 1998. Robert was heavily involved inmany businesses; founding partner of Escondido Mills, president ofAndersen Trading Company, Earth Products, Elaina’s Snacks andAndersen Gallery. Also Board of Directors for the Russian ArtistGuild, and executive vice-president of Kamut Association ofAmerica. His business interest allowed him to deal with individualsthroughout the world.

Well known and loved, Robert Andersen will always be rememberedfor his engaging personality and his talent for story telling. Hispersonal interests included traveling, cooking, music and poetry,which has been published. His poetry is an insight to the whimsicalSoul that will always be cherished and remembered by his family andfriends. While he was simi-retired, he enjoyed spending his timebetween his home in Valley Center and his beach house in RosaritoBeach, Mexico. He also had many adventures with his familythroughout the United States, Canada and Baja, where he taught hisbeloved grandchildren to fish and enjoy the great outdoors. Many anight he would play the harmonica by the campfire and encourage hisgrandchildren to take an interest in music.

Robert Andersen is survived by his wife of 47 years, ElaineAndersen; children Susan and Barry Sherman of Valley Center, Robertand Barbara Andersen of Valley Center, Dori and Mike Fortier ofWildomar; sister Jean Mercer of San Marcos; half-sister LaurieCoyle of Arizona; eight grandchildren; and onegreat-grandchild.

A private family burial will be held on Sunday, March 20, and acelebration of life ceremony will be held Monday, March 21, at 2p.m. at the Lake San Marcos Lodge.
