I am new to magic and I'm having trouble finding people to play with. The local magic shop doesn't have many people in it, so i was wondering about online. I know there is MTGO, but i want the physical cards, and i am not buying both.
Is there any program, website, community, or any thing that utilizes web cams and voice chat to play MTG online? Is there any other resource besides the local MTG shop?

You could always just play through a messaging system such as AIM or yahoo messenger. You cant see your opponent's cards, but its a quick way to get a magic game in when you can't find a RL opponent.

Doesn't MWS / Apprentice support online play for free? That would be the best option, if that's the case.

I guess if you had a friend with whom you really wanted to play with physical cards online, you could utilize Skype, but I think you're much better off with Magic Workstation.

I just use Magic Workstation. It's completely free and you just download every single card in the game to play with. Also: Moved to Magic Software.

Webcam to webcam. Cam pointed to table with your cards. Haven't tried it but may be cool.

A program like Magic Workstation would be perfect, but it seems to be a poorly made program to me. I know that may sound picky considering what i am asking for, but i use to work for Sony on their online CCG's and Magic Workstation is a huge step backwards. When i stopped working there i picked up magic again to fill that CCG void in my life =)
I will probably try a few of the other MTG shops in town, instead of just the on down the street.

In what way do you consider MWS a poorly made program? At this moment it is the best free alternative to RL magic and mtgo, and it is pretty efficient in what it does. Ofcourse it has it's technical flaws, but so does every other program in the world.
How extensive have you been testing mws, and what mistakes have you discovered in your testing? There are always other projects that are in development (like OPT and lackeyccg) that can use positive input and ideas.

Technically it's not free, though most people ignore that bit. It hasn't been updated in years. There are many things it doesn't support, such as rules enforcement and watching games.

It is free to use as is, there is a strong suggestion to register it, by a nag screen but nowhere it says that it is illegal to use mws after the 30 day trial period.
Ofcourse, if it still was supported in an active way by it's programmers, I think the willingness of people to register it would be bigger, but the way things are now, I think there is nearly nobody willing to support someone that is not willing to support his own program.
Also, to me the lack of rules enforcement is not a bad thing, it lets me play osme other games, like mental magic etc. Also, introducing rules enforcemnt would certainly atract the attention of the legal department of wotc, not to mention the millions of bugs that would pop up when doing some weird cart interactions. It is not a coincidence that the introduction date of sets online are one month after the release IRL.
Watching games is not something that is very interesting to a lot of people, because a lot of info comes to people while discussing decks and games. The bulk of a game consists of actions that are not interesting.
You might say that I call the lack of rules enforcement and the absence of replays an ommision, not a sign of a poorly made program. Also, I think that it is not that hard to make a program that reads logfiles and lets you replay them.
A poorly made program in my eyes is a program that doesnot function as intended or has some flaws that makes games played with that application moot. Look at apprentice and the problems there are with people using cheats in it.
There are some flwas indeed in mws, like the problemw when giving/taking control of a permanent etc, but they are not really major and can be very easily be worked around. I prefer them being gone, but as long as they are around, we know how to prevent them.

I like the freedom of MWS, simply because you can easily make mistakes and not fix them. Accidentally tapping a land and having nowhere to sink it into sucks, and accidentally passing priority on a card being played that you actually had a response to sucks worse.
I've been playing too much Shandalar lately. lol.
Another thing that annoys me is the free-every-card makes everyone's decks top of the line. I use MWS to test decks I'm going to build IRL, which for the most part, don't contain any of those $20+ cards that everyone's using.
